Lately, I’ve been spending less time on Facebook and I’ve just realized why … my Facebook friends aren’t posting as much content as they used to. For me, the proliferation of quizzes that have invaded Facebook in recent months undermines the true connecting power of this social media site.
I started using Facebook in July 2006 when my son was born. What an easy way to share photos and videos of my bundle of joy with interested family and friends!
With all due respect to my friends who love quizzes, I’m really not interested in your first five cars, your Disney character name or how you score on a 1970s trivia contest.
Ok … one confession… I couldn’t resist the “What Star Wars character are you?” Quiz. I’m a huge Star Wars junkie and was delighted to be dubbed a Jedi Knight.
Star Wars aside, I just don’t think these quizzes add meaningful content to my Facebook newstream. I want to know about my Friends. Surely it’s faster to write a quick status update than it is to answer twenty questions.
While I’ll continue to use Facebook to share photos with my family. (Hi, Dad!) There are some exciting new social media tools that may offer better ways to share. One of my favourites is thisMoment.com currently in its Beta testing phase and due to go live any day now. For me this site is going to create a way to share stories and photos while creating an online scrapbook with timeline.
My grandmother often comments that life isn’t made up of the BIG moments – weddings, Christmas, graduation. Instead it’s about all the little everyday moments in between – picking parsley in the garden, walking on the beach, listening to the rain. I just might get her online to enjoy thisMoment.com.
