A week of firsts.
My first time at the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival. Now in its sixth year this festival present a wonderful assortment of theatrical, dance and musical performances through leadership from Executive Director, Norman Armour. (As an aside Norman was my boss for my first professional, paid theatre job – a marketing gig – about 20 (gulp!) years ago.)
My first time seeing Jerome Bel‘s The Show Must Go On a quirky dance theatrical with a comfortably familar soundtrack and some uncomfortably self-reflective moments.
My first time at the stunning new Fei & Milton Wong Experimental Theatre at SFU Woodwards. A bright, shiny new theatre space that’s almost finished at my alma mater. What a long way Simon Fraser University’s School of Contemporary Arts has come since the crazy portables I studied in during my undergrad years in the early ’90s. I can’t wait to see Robert LePage’s The Blue Dragon there in February.
My first time attending a world premiere theatre performance and Beyond Eden at the Vancouver Playhouse was grand on many levels. I have been priveleged to see bits of Beyond Eden in development over the last couple of years and what a joy it was to see it on stage. The music is magical, the Haida people and their art are presented beautifully and respectfully and the theatrics were memorable. Its running until February 6, 2010 at the Vancouver Playhouse and then at Theatre Calgary from February 16 to March 7, 2010.
My first time in the presence of both His Honour Steven L. Point, Lieutenant Govenor of British Columbia and his wife, Her Honour Gwendolyn Point. I have been priveleged to meet them both individually over the last couple of years and it was lovely to see them together.
My first time attending Cultural Olympiad events – Beyond Eden, the PuSh Festival and The Blue Dragon are part of this and there’s so much more I hope to see.
All of these firsts in the real world fuel what I keep saying about social media content. Live life and share it.
